The Republic

Throughout The Republic, Plato presents multiple theories of our world and society and how we interact with each other. So many of the points are logical and interesting, and some even still apply to our society now even though this book was written close to 2,300 years ago. Right now society is something our generation obsesses over. Everyone rants about how messed up our society is and how unfair our world is, but they do nothing about it. They still continue to do exactly what they complain about on social media. I think this book is a really good book for our generation because our societies ways have always been the same at the core, they just seem like they change cause we change.

In 6th grade I was shown a quote in my social studies class by my teacher, Ms. Hagberg. She had us all try and guess when the quote was written and we all guessed in about a hundred year range of that year. That quote was written by Socrates about 2,300 years ago.

“Our youth now love luxury. They have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for their elders and love chatter in place of exercise; they no longer rise when elders enter the room; they contradict their parents, chatter before company; gobble up their food and tyrannize their teachers.”

We were all amazed by it because we all assumed it was written about our generation and had a great discussion about the quote and how older generations always depict us as bad people and they have no idea how we are going to live on our own someday, but that is more than likely what their own elders thought of them. Although this is just an example of a quote from Socrates, I think it really shows how smart he was and how his words and thoughts about society are so on point still to this day. I think Socrates was a great person to teach you because he really did know so much. So thanks for this book Plato. Thats it.
